Tours at the Historic Houses begin on the hour starting at 10 AM and ending at 4 PM.
Last tour of the day at the Historic Houses begins at 4 PM.


EFFECTIVE JULY 1: Per Charleston City Council ordinance all persons are required to wear face coverings when entering buildings open to the public within the City limits.
Masks must be worn while visiting The Charleston Museum and its historic houses.

These are guides to some of the document collections housed in the Archives. It is not complete. Processing of our collections is continuous and as collections are completed, they will be added. Listed is a brief scope of the collection. You will also find an embedded container list for additional clarification of each collection's contents. Finding Aids

Berry Family

Documents and letters of the Berry Family primarily from the late 19th century. Collection also includes genealogical information compiled by descendents, as well as, a few miscellaneous copies of published information that pertain to the family. Date range: 1831-1976

Cappelmann Collection

Papers - mostly receipts and short correspondence - of a local lawyer, Mr. Cappelmann; most notable for the letterheads of local Charleston businesses. Date range: 1867-1942.

Civil War

Themed collection consisting of letters, documents and ephemera produced during or relating to events of the Civil War. The bulk of Box 1 originate at the Headquarters of the Provisional Army, Charleston, S.C. - possibly an unbound copybook. Date range: 1854-1912.

Copeland Collection

Papers, ephemera and photographs of the Copeland, deSaussure and McQueen family. Date range: 1902-1992.

Education

Various ephemera related to education, primarily Charleston related. Items are from many different donors and encompass a wide type of backgrounds. See related for sub-sets of specific institutions. Date range: 1753-2006.

Education Citadel

Various ephemera related to education at the South Carolina Military Academy and The Citadel. Date range: 1866-1975.

Education College of Charleston

Various ephemera related to education at College of Charleston. Date range: 1848-2009.

Education High School of Charleston

Various ephemera related to education at High School of Charleston. Date range: 1842-2001.

Education Memminger

Various ephemera related to education at Memminger High and Normal Schools. Date range: 1877-2005.

Education Porter-Gaud

Various ephemera related to education at Porter Military Academy and Porter-Gaud School. Date range: 1894-2001.

Education University of South Carolina

Various ephemera related to education at University of South Carolina. Date range: 1854-1948.

Fire Companies

Themed collection relating to the local fire companies but includes documents relating to fire insurance and prevention. There are ledgers from the Washington Fire Company, the Marion Fire Company, and the Vigilant Fire Company. Also included are the rosters of the Free Negroes belonging to the various city engine companies during the Civil War [these are digitized on the Lowcountry Digital Library]. Date range: 1824-1935.

Holley Collection

Family papers - the bulk of which relate to a trip west taken in 1915 to see the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (San Francisco). Donor's father, Frank Quarterman, was from Georgia and there are a few documents in the collection that relate directly to him. Many of the postcards that are addressed were sent to him. Date range: 1902-1915.

Hurricane Hugo

Primarily consists of newspapers printed during and after Hurricane Hugo, photographs and some ephemera. Date range: 1989-1990.

Logan, Watson, Plowden and McIver Families

Ephemera, correspondence and photographs relating to the Logan, Watson, Plowden and McIver families. It includes documents and receipts relating to the residence at 37 Church Street, the summer house Restalrig and various other personal property. Date range: 1844-2001

Lynes Family

Documents, correspondence and ephemera relating to the Lynes family. Date range: 1837-1924. See also the website on the Lynes Family and Foxbank Plantation at www.thefoxbankproject.org.

Pearce Collection

Ephemera and documents relating to the Boesch and Von Oven families. See Biographical Note for genealogical information. Date range: 1877-1961.

Politics & Politicians

Themed collection consisting primarily of ephemera but also including letters and other documents produced by politicians, both local and national, or relating to the field of politics and government. Date range: 1868-2007.

R.R. Doss

Military papers of R. R. Doss. Date range: 1928-1945.

Shokes Collection

Ephemera and documents relating to the Charleston fire department, as well as, firefighting in general. Includes photographs. Material collected by Fred C. Shokes, Charleston Fire Chief circa 1955-1965. See Biographical Note for genealogical information. Date range: 1900-1955.

Slavery

Themed collection consisting of various materials relating to slavery, does include original documentation of slave sales. Date range: 1765-1894.

Tourism

Ephemera related to tourism in Charleston. Date range: 1973-1980.

Trade & Advertising

Materials relating to trade & advertising, as well as, business & commerce, primarily in the Charleston area. The bulk of the collection consists of receipts, letterheads and trade cards (trade cards are catalogued separately as individual objects and are not listed here). There are also some catalogs and other items, such as desk blotters, calendars and notebooks. Date range: 1818-1950.

Tree Survey (1910)

Collection consists of a survey of trees growing in Charleston in 1910 completed by Laura Bragg. The survey was conducted by the City Board of Parks and Playgrounds, under the direction of Mr. Alfred H. von Kolnitz. Also included are two newspaper clippings of the tree surveys completed in 1939. Date range: 1910-1939.

Yearbooks

Ephemera related to tourism in Charleston. Date range: 1973-1980.

Williams Collection

Bulk of the collection consists of Ellison Williams' bird log books, although some ephemera is also present. Memoriam information in Biographical Note. Date range: 1911-1966.

World War I

Themed collection consisting of letters, documents and ephemera produced during or relating to events of World War I. Date range: 1914-1919.

World War I (2008.16)

World War I era military documents and ephemera of Henry deSaussure. Date range: 1918-1919.

World War II

Themed collection consisting of letters, documents and ephemera produced during or relating to events of World War II. Bulk date range: 1940-1946.

World War II (2005.73)

Manuscripts and other ephemera related to World War II; collection was purchased so does not relate to one particular family. Date range: 1940-1946.

25th Regiment, SCV

Collection consisting of military documents of the South Carolina Volunteers, 25th Regiment, during their stay on James Island, South Carolina. Date range: 1862-1863.
