These are guides to some of the document collections housed in the Archives. It is not complete. Processing of our collections is continuous and as collections are completed, they will be added. Listed is a brief scope of the collection. You will also find an embedded container list for additional clarification of each collection's contents. Documents and letters of the Berry Family primarily from the late 19th century. Collection also includes genealogical information compiled by descendents, as well as, a few miscellaneous copies of published information that pertain to the family. Date range: 1831-1976
Papers - mostly receipts and short correspondence - of a local lawyer, Mr. Cappelmann; most notable for the letterheads of local Charleston businesses. Date range: 1867-1942.
Themed collection consisting of letters, documents and ephemera produced during or relating to events of the Civil War. The bulk of Box 1 originate at the Headquarters of the Provisional Army, Charleston, S.C. - possibly an unbound copybook. Date range: 1854-1912.

Various ephemera related to education, primarily Charleston related. Items are from many different donors and encompass a wide type of backgrounds. See related for sub-sets of specific institutions. Date range: 1753-2006.

Various ephemera related to education at University of South Carolina. Date range: 1854-1948.
Themed collection relating to the local fire companies but includes documents relating to fire insurance and prevention. There are ledgers from the Washington Fire Company, the Marion Fire Company, and the Vigilant Fire Company. Also included are the rosters of the Free Negroes belonging to the various city engine companies during the Civil War [these are digitized on the Lowcountry Digital Library]. Date range: 1824-1935.
Family papers - the bulk of which relate to a trip west taken in 1915 to see the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (San Francisco). Donor's father, Frank Quarterman, was from Georgia and there are a few documents in the collection that relate directly to him. Many of the postcards that are addressed were sent to him. Date range: 1902-1915.
Primarily consists of newspapers printed during and after Hurricane Hugo, photographs and some ephemera. Date range: 1989-1990.
Ephemera, correspondence and photographs relating to the Logan, Watson, Plowden and McIver families. It includes documents and receipts relating to the residence at 37 Church Street, the summer house Restalrig and various other personal property. Date range: 1844-2001

Themed collection consisting of various materials relating to slavery, does include original documentation of slave sales. Date range: 1765-1894.

Materials relating to trade & advertising, as well as, business & commerce, primarily in the Charleston area. The bulk of the collection consists of receipts, letterheads and trade cards (trade cards are catalogued separately as individual objects and are not listed here). There are also some catalogs and other items, such as desk blotters, calendars and notebooks. Date range: 1818-1950.
Collection consists of a survey of trees growing in Charleston in 1910 completed by Laura Bragg. The survey was conducted by the City Board of Parks and Playgrounds, under the direction of Mr. Alfred H. von Kolnitz. Also included are two newspaper clippings of the tree surveys completed in 1939. Date range: 1910-1939.
