Description:

Watercolor on ivory study depicting the head of a woman wearing 17th century period costume rendered in miniature. The ivory square is glued to a rectangular piece of backing paper and shows the artist's brush strokes used to remove excess paint.
Meant to aid an artist in developing their style in painting a miniature portrait, these studies of human facial features would have been copied directly from a student guide. Although research is ongoing, it is thought that Louisa C. Strobel is the artist and painted this woman in 17th century costume as practice to further develop her realistic style for her miniature portraits.
