untitled (Woman Smoking a Pipe, unfinished)

Contact The Charleston Museum for image use and credit instructions.
Description:
Watercolor on paper of an unidentified woman seated on a wooden bench as she smokes her pipe. She wears a head scarf and is outlined with thick, cool hues in shades of blue and black. Areas of dark shadow and exposed skin are shaded using a wet-in-wet technique. The image is a study for a larger work, suggested by the second outline of the woman and the hatched setting (see 1975.32.156).
