untitled (Woman Smoking a Pipe, unfinished)

Contact The Charleston Museum for image use and credit instructions.

Description:

Watercolor on paper of an unidentified woman seated on a wooden bench as she smokes her pipe. She wears a white head wrap and holds a bouquet of flowers in her left hand. Ball has outlined the figure with thick, cool hues in shades of blue using a wet-in-wet technique to shade areas of her skin. The color blocking and outlines make the painting print-like. This artwork was likely rejected, there is a study painted in the upper right corner and a square piece has been cut out the upper left corner.
