Description:

Daguerreotype of a young boy surrounded by a gold metal border in a full case of pressed leather and purple velvet. The artist has tinted the long sleeved skirted outfit in a bluish-grey color, and has placed the child on a chair holding an open book on a table. This cased photograph was found in the carpenter's shop at the old Charleston Museum September 29, 1937 and remains unidentified.

From the mid-16th century until the late 19th or early 20th century, young boys were outfitted in dresses or other skirted garments until they were between 2 to 8 years old.
