Description:

Sepia photograph taken after clean up had begun following the destruction caused by two tornadoes that struck the penninsula on the morning of September 29. Three additional twisters would also hit James Island, Sullivan's Island and the outlying areas.
Paine shot this image from Market Street looking toward the United States Custom House (200 East Bay Street) with the Charleston Paper Company (225 East Bay Street) to the right. He noted on reverse, "Paper Co. was wiped out 5 dead here, Market & E. Bay Tornado 9/29/38 Paine Photo."
