Description:

Sepia photograph taken after clean up had begun following the destruction caused by two tornadoes that struck the penninsula on the morning of September 29. Three additional twisters would also hit James Island, Sullivan's Island and the outlying areas.
Paine shot the image from the front steps of the United States Custom House (200 East Bay Street) looking onto Market Street. He noted on reverse, "Tornado at Market & East Bay Paper Co. and Market [Constructed] out. 5 killed, 9/29/38, Paine Photo."
