Description:

Photograph showing piles of brick and lumber that once made up buildings on Church and Cumberland Streets. Two tornadoes struck the penninsula on the morning of September 29 with three additional twisters hitting James Island, Sullivan's Island and the outlying areas.
Paine shot the image looking toward the steeple of St. Philip's Church. A woman and boy are picking up lumber as another woman walks past. Notation on reverse reads, "Ripped up St. Philip's Steeple. Messed up the whole Church St Cumberland Area. 9/29/38 8:07 Photo by M.B. Paine."
