Description:

Sepia photograph taken after clean up had begun following the destruction caused by two tornadoes that struck the penninsula on the morning of September 29. Three additional twisters would also hit James Island, Sullivan's Island and the outlying areas.
Paine shot this image from an elevated position on the corner of Cumberland and East Bay Streets. He noted on reverse, "Pearlstine's Coffee & Mcdse. Shop, Tornado 9/29/38. Photo by Paine Hundreds of boxes of loaded shells being slung around by workers."
