Description:

Watercolor on paper illustrating a large commercial ship, the "Ferndale," docked at the wharf on Columbus Street, downtown Charleston. Two dock workers are visible in the center with supplies on wooden pallets preparing to load them on the ship. The ship is devoid of outlines, but the crates and barrels in the foreground are outlined. The pigment is applied using a mixture of wet and dry brush techniques. The practice sketch for this watercolor is in the collection (see 1975.32.498q).
