Description:

Oil on canvas portrait of Susannah Simmons Bee (Mrs. John Bee). The subject is before a plain background and dressed in white dress with a lace-trimmed neckline. A green mantle is draped over her right shoulder. The gilt-frame, possibly by the shop of Thomas Elfe, is formed from gesso in open-fret pattern and guilded.

Susannah Simmons Bee (Mrs. John Bee), April 1, 1713, M. Aug. 19, 1728, D. June 4, 1769. Daughter of John and Rebecca Simmons of Beach Hill. She married John Bee, son of John and Mary Bee of Pon Pon, Colleton County. He was born July 31, 1707, was Brigadier Colonel of the two Southern Regiments of the Militia of the Province of Carolina. He died and was buried at Pon-Pon, in 1749, aged 42 years 7 mo. 3 days. Mrs Bee died in Charleston, June 4 1769, aged 56 years and was buried at Pon-Pon beside her husband.
