Ovoid-shaped storage jar created by enslaved potter, David Drake (Dave the Potter). Designed with two crock or ear-shaped handles at each side beneath a rolled rim, it is finished in a drab olive alkaline glaze. Drake inscribed the date of "31st July 1840" on the front, upper shoulder between the handles and on the opposite side he placed two lines of poetry, "Dave belongs to Mr. Miles wher the oven bakes & the pot biles."
