Description:

Black and white photograph of the general view north (front) elevation of the South Carolina Loan & Trust Company building located at 17 Broad Street.

Built c.1848 by attorney Claudian B. Northrop, it was highly remodeled in 1870-71 by Thomas H. Abrahams and John H. Seyle when it became the South Carolina Loan & Trust building. The facade's cast iron storefront and Italianate style plaster ornamentations were added during this remodel as well as the interior plaster and woodwork.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Low Country between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
