Soldiers Swimming

Description:

Black and white photograph of four soldiers in the nude, standing on a ship's bow preparing to jump into the water. The ship is presumed to be the "J.S. Heyward" (see MK 7535 and MK 7661) and is docked at an unidentified wharf where several spectators have gathered to watch. A fifth unclothed soldier can just be seen to the far right. The soldiers were possibly part of the 12th Regiment Infantry, New York Volunteers, mustered into service during the Spanish-American War. It appears they stopped in Charleston on the way to Camp George H. Thomas in Georgia before shipping out to Cuba. See MK 7652 and MK 7654.
Printed from a glass plate negative held in the Museum's collection.
