Description:
1844 Charleston copper slave badge with chamfered corners currently on exhibit in First Hall stamped, Servant No. 1031. The serrated border around the date stamp is a unique characteristic of the 1844 issue. This badge would have been worn by a slave who was hired out to work as a house servant, washer woman or maid.
