Description:
One of five freshly laid black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigricollis californicus) eggs (CBE8850 - CBE8854) collected by Raine in a nest he described as "floating decayed rushes in a marsh. Eggs covered with decayed vegetation." Later acquired by Ernest Tabor.
This grebe is also sometimes referred to as the American eared grebe or simply eared grebe.
