Podiceps grisegena, Grebe egg

Description:

One of four red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena holboelii) eggs collected from the International Airport in the south central district of Anchorage (see CBE1738-CBE1741). The original collector Leonard J. Peyton, noted the eggs had evidence of "trace" incubation and the nest was "100 feet out in a small lake in a patch of dry bullrushes made of dry stems of the bullrushes and lined with roots of the same." The adults were present to confirm identification. Later acquired by Ernest Cutts.
