Podiceps grisegena, Grebe egg

Description:

One of five red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena holboelii) eggs collected from Carpenter Lake in the Turtle Mountains of North Dakota (see CBE1559-CBE1563). Collector George Withey noted the incubation of the eggs had begun and made their identification when he "saw bird" nearby and presumed it to be one of the parents. He also noted of the nest, "made of reeds; mud mass in water." Later acquired by Alexander Sprunt.
