Podiceps grisegena, Grebe egg

Description:

One of four red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena holboelii) eggs collected from Wellington Co., Ontario, Canada (see CBE1730-CBE1733). Collector Robert Pickering noted incubation had just started and the nest was "a floating platform of rotten reeds and roots hollowed to hold eggs. Very little material to cover eggs when parent left nest. Placed out in large marsh water - was six feet deep at nesting site." Later acquired by Ernest Cutts.

Original set mark: 1/58, Pickering collection
