Description:
Watercolor on ivory study depicting the bottom half of a nose with full lips and chin rendered in miniature. The ivory square is glued to a rectangular piece of backing paper and shows the artist's brush strokes used to remove excess paint.
Meant to aid an artist in developing their style in painting a miniature portrait, these studies of human facial features would have been copied directly from a student guide. Although research is ongoing, it is thought that Louisa C. Strobel is the artist and would have painted this lower portion of a face as practice to further develop her realistic style for her miniature portraits.
