Description:

Photograph of the entrance hall at the Nathaniel Russell House (51 Meeting) looking west. Paine set his camera up in the entrance way to capture the fanlight, the chandelier, several pieces of furniture and rugs that decorate the hallway. Paine noted on reverse, "Collinear F22. III #3. Super Pan. Undercover. 3 Flood Lamps. F 22 - 12 Secs. A20 1. Best Copy Hold. Photo by M.B. Paine. 1934 Charleston S.C."

Completed in 1808 for merchant Nathaniel Russell, it was designed by an unknown architect in the Federal-style. Constructed with delicate and elaborate details, this three-story town home features oval-shaped rooms, palladian windows, fanlights and a free-flying staircase. Francis J. and Mary Roscoe Randolph Pelzer purchased the house sometime after 1906 and lived there until his death in 1939 and her death in 1952.
