Description:
Black and white photograph of the entrance hall at the Nathaniel Russell House looking west. A chandelier, several pieces of furniture and two rugs decorate the hallway. Paine noted on reverse, "Super Pan. 3 Flood Lamps 12 Secs F22. A20 1. Collinear III. 3. A famous Old 'floating' stairway Photo by M.B. Paine. Francis Pelzer Hall - Looking West. Only copy hold."
Completed in 1808 for merchant Nathaniel Russell, it was designed by an unknown architect in the Federal-style. Constructed with delicate and elaborate details, this three-story town home features oval-shaped rooms, palladian windows, fanlights and a free-flying staircase. Francis J. and Mary Roscoe Randolph Pelzer purchased the house sometime after 1906 and lived there until his death in 1939 and her death in 1952.
