Description:
Black and white photograph of the entrance hall at the Nathaniel Russell House looking east toward the front door. A large, full length portrait of a woman (possibly Mary Roscoe Randolph) painted by W. Haskell Coffin in 1900 is prominently visible on the wall. A chandelier, several pieces of furniture and two rugs decorate the hallway and entrance way. Paine noted on reverse, "Take a look. Some Hall! Nathaniel Russell. 1815. 51 Meeting Charleston S.C. (Now Francis Pelzer) Photo by M.B. Paine. Nov 1934 [incorrect date]. Collinear III. 3. HP. Graflex. S.S. Pan. 3# 1 Flood lamps. 20 and 10 secs F-22."
Completed in 1808 for merchant Nathaniel Russell, it was designed by an unknown architect in the Federal-style. Constructed with delicate and elaborate details, this three-story town home features oval-shaped rooms, palladian windows, fanlights and a free-flying staircase. Francis J. and Mary Roscoe Randolph Pelzer purchased the house sometime after 1906 and lived there until his death in 1939 and her death in 1952.
