In 1876, the 161 foot lighthouse tower along with a three-story house was completed for just under $150,000. Powered by lard oil, the Fresnel lens was activated on October 1, 1876 with George W. Williams serving as head keeper along with three assistants, Richard M. Jones, George W. Veronee, and John Barrett.
