Description:

Ambrotype in a stamped leather case of Louis Manigault, Jr. as a small boy. The handwritten label by Louis Manigault, Sr. at the bottom reads, "Louis 16th July 1860." The photographer (or Louis, Sr.) placed him standing on a chair with one hand resting on a covered table.

From the mid-16th century until the late 19th or early 20th century, young boys were outfitted in dresses or other skirted garments until they were between 2 to 8 years old. Oftentimes, their hair was kept long and styled in ringlets.

Gift of Mary and George Hlavaty.
