Description:

Watercolor and gold paint on paper illustrating two mushrooms joined at the stem base. Jervey noted along the bottom, "Lepiota americani. Poisonous" and wrote on reverse, "The Lepiota Americani has red flesh & redish brown appearance few people can see the difference according to the amount of red in the flesh is the amount of poison in the plant. The [?] of Aiken S.C. were completley fooled by it thinking it was a Lepiota Procera they gathered a quartful & ate them but laughed heavily over it thinking they had found a wonderful emetic."
