Description:

Sepia photograph of a night scene on King Street looking north from Beaufain Street. Strings of lights span the street and the lights from the automobiles create a streaking effect. Silvers 5 and Dime (249 King) is visible on the corner to the left and the Federal Clothing Store (244 King) and Shade Shop (246 King) are visible on the right. Paine noted on reverse, "King St. Xmas Night 1910* Coll III. 3. Premo G. W.W. Pan Plate 630pm 10 seco F8."

The date of "1910" that Paine noted is incorrect. Silvers and C.B. Prentiss at 250 King Street are not listed in the 1910 directory and the Francis Marion Hotel (visible in the background) was not opened until 1924. All of the stores listed above are found in the 1931-1932 Charleston City Directory.
