Josiah Smith Residences

Black and white photograph of the north (front) elevation before the restoration of the Josiah Smith building located at 85-87 Broad Street.

Built by Josiah Smith as a double building residence for his two sons, William Stevens Smith and Samuel Smith, c. 1795. Constructed from Charleston grey brick laid in Flemish bond and designed in the Adamesque or Federal period style, they were sold separately in 1859 and 1863. The property was united again between 1878 and 1879 and finally restored to its original appearance in 1976.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Lowcountry between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
