Description:

Black and white photograph of the general view north (front) elevation of the commercial building at 13 Broad Street when it operated as the Joseph P. Riley Real Estate and Insurance Company.

Thought to have been built c. 1800, the red brick Queen Anne facade was added in 1890 by attorney, Henry W. Connor who occupied the space as his office. The building served as a variety of businesses until Joseph P. Riley, Sr. acquired the building c.1944 and moved his insurance, real estate and mortgage company from 35 Broad Street. It remained his place of business until 1986 when Russ Parker purchased the agency and renamed it Riley & Associates, Inc. It remained in the same location until January of 2001 when it moved to Mount Pleasant.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Lowcountry between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
