Joseph Manigault House Staircase

Description:

Pastel pencil drawing on paper illustrating the curved staircase in the foyer of the Joseph Manigault House. Looking through an arched doorway at the southside of the house, the viewer gazes upon the north entrance, the staircase, and a palladian window visible on the intermediate landing. Smith uses the full spectrum of color, blending warm and cool hues, which causes the flat surfaces to appear to vibrate rather than curve smoothly. By giving the house movement, the structure develops a life of its own.
