Island Water Taxi

Description:

Photograph of a large bateau outfitted with sail and oars. Two men are at the bow (behind the sail) with oars in hand and a third man is at the rudder with various men and women seated between them. Paine's notation on reverse reads, "An 'inter-island liner' from Darkyville."
This type of water transport was used to taxi people living on the islands to and from Charleston until bridges and automobiles made it easier to travel.
