Description:

Oil on canvas portrait of Isaac Holmes by Jeremiah Theus. The subject is seated before a plain background wearing a brown suit with buttoned waistcoat, mid cloth, and a curled wig.

Holmes was born in 1702 to Francis and Rebecca Wharfe Holmes. He married Elizabeth Perroneau (1704-1773) on January 19, 1723. They lived in Charleston where he operated as a merchant and was Member of the Council (1750), dying on November 25, 1751. This is one of two known portraits of Holmes by Theus; the other is in the collection of the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, MA. Both have a history in the Holmes family.
