Description:

Black and white photograph of the general view of the stable building at the Heyward-Washington House located at 87 Church Street.

Originally built by John Milner, Jr. in 1749, the brick carriage house and stables included a half floor outfitted with space for hay and possibly quarters for the slaves who cared for the horses. It continued to be used as storage until the late twentieth century when the Society of Cincinnati purchased and renovated the building for their headquarters. In 1929, The Charleston Museum purchased the main house and lot with all outbuildings, opening the main house to visitors in 1930 as Charleston's first house museum.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Lowcountry between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
