Description:

Black and white photograph of the Hampton Plantation house located on Wambaw Creek (a branch of the South Santee River) 9 miles north of McClellanville in St. James Santee Parish.

During President George Washington's visit in 1791, he was told the large oak tree in front was to be cut down to clear the view. Washington disagreed with this decision and the Horry family decided to keep it. The tree is now referred to as the "Washington Oak."
