Description:

Black and white photograph of the Grand Duchesse (also known as La Grand Duchesse) docked as the 2nd or 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry embarks. Several logs are visible in the foreground. This image was printed from a glass plate negative held in the Museum's collection and is a wonderful representation of the differents ways the port of Charleston was used.

The "La Grand Duchesse" was a vessel chartered from the Plant Investment Company during the Spanish-American War and used to transport the 71st New York Volunteers from Cuba to Montauk Point, the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from Charleston to Puerto Rico on April 28th, 1898 and the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from Charleston to Ponce, Puerto Rico on July 20th, 1898.
