Sepia photograph of the basement at Fenwick Hall Plantation showing a square doorway in the brick wall to an underground passage as well as the circular stone design that marked the emergency water well in the ground. Handwritten on reverse reads, "a rare example of underground passage and emergency water well in cellar of ancient 'Fenwick Castle'. Used to combat Indian attacks in 1700 Johns Island S.C. Photo Aug. 1926 M.B. Paine."
