Description:

Daguerreotype of young Edwin S. Ehney. He has been dressed in a plaid dress with white ankle-length pantaloons (or pantalettes). The photographer has placed him standing on a chair next to a covered table and closed book. The image is surrounded in a gold metal border and mounted in a wooden box on stamped leather. Cover is missing.

From the mid-16th century until the late 19th or early 20th century, young boys were outfitted in dresses or other skirted garments, sometimes with pantaloons, until they were between 2 to 8 years old.

Gift of Mrs. Alice Lee Ehney.
