Photograph showing the damage from the earthquake that occurred on August 31, 1886 to the buildings at the corner of East Bay and Cumberland Streets. In view are the William M. Bird Company located at 205 East Bay Street, Wm. E. Holmes building at 203 East Bay and the Chafee & O'Brien building at 205 East Bay. Caption on reverse reads, "No. 30 Corner East Bay and Cumberland streets." The 1886 Charleston City Directory lists the William E. Holmes building at 207 East Bay and the Chafee & O'Brien building at 209 and 211 East Bay Street.

George LaGrange Cook was a well-known photographer in Charleston who photographed the destruction of the 1886 earthquake soon after it happened, producing a series of images titled "Cook's Earthquake Views of Charleston and Vicinity" that could be purchased as souvenirs.
