Photograph showing the damage from the earthquake that occurred on August 31, 1886 to the residence of Charles H. Drayton located at 25 East Battery. Handwritten on reverse reads, "Residence of C.H. Drayton 25 East Battery S.W. corner of Atlantic 1886 Earthquake".
Charles began to build this house in c.1885. The 1886 Charleston City Directory lists Drayton at 49 Chapel Street while the 1887 directory lists him at 25 East Battery.
George LaGrange Cook was a well-known photographer in Charleston who photographed the destruction of the 1886 earthquake soon after it happened, producing a series of images titled "Cook's Earthquake Views of Charleston and Vicinity" that could be purchased as souvenirs.
