Photograph of Ellison DuRant "Cotton Ed" Smith sitting on a cotton bale in a wagon pulled by four mules. Various supporters are seated next to him beneath a campaign sign declaring, "Ed Smith The People's Candidate for U.S. Senate." In 1908, he "stumped" the campaign trail throughout South Carolina expressing his loyalty to "Miss Cotton" and won the election.
