Description:

Watercolor and paint on paper illustrating a cluster of orange mushrooms. Jervey noted on the bottom, "Jack O'Lantern Clytocibe illudens Poisonous" and wrote on reverse, "The other orange jack O. Lantern is phosphorescent [sic] at night. If you put a large clump in a Pan of water in a dark closet & let them stay till they become oldish, you can read a letter by the light they exude. Then they are poisonous but not fatal."

On the reverse, handwritten in ink it reads, "The other orange Jack O, Lantern is phosphorescent at night. If you put a large chunk in a Pan of water in a dark closet & let them stay till they become oldish, you can read a letter by the light they exude. Then they are poisonous but not fatal."
