Description:

Black and white photograph of the general view southeast corner of a residential building located at 158 Broad Street.

According to the 1890 Charleston City Directory Antonio Gastaver began living at 158 Broad Street. No prior records have been found for the property making it likely that Gastaver was responsible for building the Victorian style house that resides there now. Gastaver lived in the house until his death in 1928. During that time he ran his own cotton broker and buyer business while also acting as the congressional consul for Spain from 1900 to 1911 and Uruguay from 1903 until at least 1912. His wife continued to live in the house after his death until 1932 where she either left the area or passed away. The house has continued to function as a residential property either as a single family home or multi rental property until present.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Lowcountry between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
