Description:

Sepia photograph showing members of the expedition cutting a trail in the jungle near the research station, Kalacoon House. Three men (believed to be convicts) stand to the left of the log trail, William Beebe stands on the log (center) and George Inness Hartley stands to the right. According to Anna Heyward Taylor's April 26 letter to her sister Nell, expedition leader William Beebe applied to the British government for the use of "convicts" to cut paths into the jungle from their Tropical Research Station.
