Photograph of a group of sailors in uniform with rifles as they guard the entrance to the Charleston County Courthouse addressed at 77 Meeting Street. They were more than likely called in to assist the South Carolina Militia with mob duty. Bennett captured the scene from Meeting Street.

On October 15th a ballet recount for the mayoral election between T.T. Hyde and John P. Grace was underway when a riot broke out between both party supporters resulting in Sidney Cohen, a reporter for the News & Courier, being accidentally shot through the lung and killed. In the aftermath, Governor Richard Manning sent in the South Carolina Militia to guard against further violence.
