1915 Election Mob Duty

Photograph of two sailors in uniform carrying rifles on their shoulders as they patrol the area in front of the Charleston County Courthouse on Broad Street (between Church and Meeting Streets). They were more than likely called in to assist the South Carolina Militia with mob duty.

On October 15th a ballet recount for the mayoral election between T.T. Hyde and John P. Grace was underway when a riot broke out between both party supporters resulting in Sidney Cohen, a reporter for the News & Courier, being accidentally shot through the lung and killed. In the aftermath, Governor Richard Manning sent in the South Carolina Militia to guard against further violence.
