On March 15, 2018, Ron Roth of the Humanities Council of South Carolina’s Speakers Bureau will present The Entrepreneurial Artist: John James Audubon in the Lowcountry. John James Audubon’s Birds of America ranks as one of the greatest achievements in American art. Its groundbreaking format depicting 435 of North America’s known bird species life-size, and in habitat, captured the imagination of the public and catapulted him into international fame.  This presentation provides audiences with insight into Audubon’s ambitious, self-styled role as adventurer, artist and natural scientist. Some of his finest work was completed in the Lowcountry around Charleston, work that will be featured in this presentation.

Ron Roth is former director and chief curator of the Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pennsylvania, and director of the Nebraska Museum of Art of the University of Nebraska.  He has curated or co-curated numerous exhibitions on the life and work of John James Audubon and purchased major works by Audubon for the Museum of Nebraska Art.
