Silk Shopping in Colonial America, Lecture with Curator of Historic Textiles, Teresa Teixeira
In colonial Charleston, within the category of luxury goods, not only were textiles among the most expensive, but they were also the most visible. Only the wealthiest could afford to buy and wear elaborate silks, which could be seen by the wearer’s peers in public situations in ways that other status symbols, such as silverware or furniture, could not. Join Teresa Teixeira, Curator of Historic Textiles to learn how the wealthy people of Charleston obtained this luxury and how local heroine Eliza Lucas Pinckney attempted to spearhead an American effort at silk production. This lecture is free for members and free to the public. Registration is encouraged.
