Exclusive Storeroom Tour: Diving into Sharks with Curator of Natural History, Matthew Gibson

Sharks are a vital component of a healthy marine habitat. As apex predators, their presence shows there are enough prey species in the ecosystem, whereas conversely, their absence would suggest a problem with their marine habitat. Sharks maintain the health of marine ecosystems by targeting weaker prey, leaving the stronger prey to survive and breed. Shark week, which is at this point is essentially a recognized holiday for shark enthusiasts, commonly highlights the environmental impact of sharks as well as their long history in the fossil record.

In celebration of Shark Week, join The Charleston Museum’s Curator of Natural History, Matthew Gibson, behind-the-scenes for an Exclusive Storeroom Tour of the Museum’s Natural History Collection, and the drawers of artifacts from the Lowcountry’s most legendary predators. Participants will go behind the scenes into the Museum’s Storeroom to learn more about shark biodiversity and the “shark war” that potentially led to the extinction of the megalodon. This tour includes admission to The Charleston Museum. Registration is required and space is limited. Children must be accompanied by an adult for this program.
