In Charleston, there were 249 master cabinetmakers between 1700 and 1825, and The Charleston Museum continues to preserve and study many of their esteemed pieces. Today, the Museum’s internationally recognized collection of Charleston furniture is exhibited permanently within its two historic houses and features numerous works from the Lowcountry’s various stylistic eras.

On August 27, at 5:30 p.m., join Chief Curator Grahame Long and Assistant Curator Neil Nohrden for an exclusive tour of the Heyward-Washington House’s esteemed furniture collection. Go behind the ropes for an up-close study of these significant English and Charleston-made pieces and learn about their construction, various styles, materials, makers, and the market during which they were built and distributed. Hear about acclaimed local cabinet-makers, including Thomas Elfe, Robert Walker, and Martin Pfeninger who is responsible for making the priceless Holmes-Edwards Library Bookcase, considered one of the finest examples of American-made colonial furniture.

Participants are invited to arrive early between 5 – 5:15 p.m. to enjoy refreshments in the Heyward-Washngton House’s beautiful garden. This tour will allow participants an exclusive opportunity to see the house and it’s collections up-close and personally as well as a chance to learn from Museum curators while taking part in conversations and asking questions.
