Details

The economic success of rice cultivation in the Lowcountry was due to the knowledge and forced labor of enslaved Africans. By the 1790s, Carolina Gold was the preferred variety and at the time of the Civil War 3.5 to 5 million bushels were grown in South Carolina. Although attempts were made to continue its cultivation, by the time of the Great Depression, Carolina Gold was virtually extinct. Brought back in the 1980s, this heirloom rice is once again being grown in South Carolina. This long grain rice has an exceptional aroma and flavor. Carolina gold rice is enjoying a resurgence as a heirloom food. For more information on the research and production of this heritage grain, see the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation, www.carolinagoldricefoundation.org.
